“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith Published: February 2003 ISBN: 1400034779 (Updated: November 20, 2004.)
I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I opened this book’s covers. And/but… I found a book that I very much looked forward to reading each day. To the point where I would grab it and just sit and read for 15 minutes while whatever I was cooking was "cooking" or just for a quiet break or, or, or…
A pleasant time. A pleasant read. A main character that I feel I “respectfully” know and like. And a context — this book is located in Botswana and has a woman detective as the subject — that is what? An easier way to visit this continent than through The In-Between World of Vikram Lall by M. G. Vassanji. (Notably, this latter is an excellent but rough-to-take-in book that starts in 1953 in colonial Kenya. I definitely recommend it for times when you are able to take in more heavy duty subjects.)
Couldn’t wait to get back to it factor? For the sheer pleasure of the read, a 3 out of 5 hearts. |
