“The Lost Garden” by Helen Humphreys Published: October 2003 ISBN: 0006391818
(Updated: December 12, 2004.)
This book was lent to me by my best friend and came with relatively high recommendations. The author is Canadian and the work of fiction is situated in London at the beginning of WWII. (As an aside… I notice that the book itself fits one of mother’s important criteria — that the book be light enough to not damage her nose too badly when she falls asleep and the book lands there with a thump :o)
I perhaps read this book a bit more quickly than I should have but I found I had sort of a weird relationship with it. It is definitely a mood piece meaning that as soon as I had read a paragraph I found myself back in the light and smells and texture of the physical place being described. And, given that I found it all rather sad, I wanted to get out of it more quickly than I perhaps ought to have.
Interesting for the creation of the mood. Some beautiful wisdoms. Some great relationships of what? words? thoughts? feelings? truths? that I have never come across before. But… my voracious diving back into this book was in order to finish more quickly. My rating then is a 2 out of 5 hearts. |
