“Fruit of the Lemon” by Andrea Levy Published: March 2005 ISBN: 0747261148
(Updated: July 16, 2005.)
From the Publisher…
After college, Faith Jackson finds her perfect flat and perfect job, which means so much to her status conscious parents, and are really less than perfect for her. Angered by her parent’s decision to return to Jamaica, Faith follows them there where she meets her Aunt Coral. Coral tells Faith stories about her ancestors who, contrary to historical belief, came from many different countries including Cuba, Harlem and Scotland. Fruit of The Lemon is proof of Andrea Levy’s deep understanding of the social complexities characterizing modern British life.
Having read Small Island not too long ago, I think that I was looking for "more of the same". And… what I found sort of is but mainly isn’t.
Enjoyable writing, enjoyable contexts but, for me, the characters themselves didn’t draw me in as much as the characters of Small Island did.
A pleasant book that drew a “couldn’t wait to get back it factor” of three out of five hearts out of me. |
